Our Dog Is Sensitive to Loud Noises—Like Gunshots

2021-01-14 – We had a shooting in my neighborhood the other day. It was spectacular, but details are sketchy. The gunman began his rampage on the south side of Chicago and ended up on the north side, a few blocks from us. He shot and killed several. The police shot and killed him. As far as I know, there was nothing political in the murders. Last I heard, the police didn’t know of a motive.

But with all that has been going on, this rampage brought to mind a rampage that came through my neighborhood more than 20 years ago. That rampage was political. The gunman was a white supremacist who was randomly shooting blacks and Jews, first in neighboring Evanston and then in my neighborhood.

We were advised to stay inside and away from windows.

But what do you do with your dog? We still had to take him on walks. But we stayed away from the street. Life has to continue.

So, while spoiled boys with arsenals are storming our nation’s capital, the rest of us are trying to live our lives. We’re going to work. Making meals. Doing laundry. And taking care of our pets.

Our dog is particularly sensitive to loud noises, like gunshots.
