2016-01-21 – “Let us be lovers, we’ll marry our fortunes together.”
Look, I’m a sucker for a song. And Bernie Sander’s latest commercial really gets to me. There’s nothing much to it in the way of policy. It’s just images of people and the Sanders campaign over Simon and Garfunkel’s song “America.”
It recalls for me the last line of the Declaration of Independence:
“We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”
“Let us be lovers, we’ll marry our fortunes together.”
There’s no lovers in American politics today. No shared fortunes. Except for Bernie. And the rest of us who haven’t become cynical—or wish we haven’t. What has happened?
“The’ve all come to look for America.”
We’ve all come to look for America.
