An Instrument of God

2013-12-31 – My friend Bob likes to say we are instruments of god. This is a hard one for me because I don’t believe in a god that is an agent. I don’t believe in a god that is a creator. I don’t believe in a god that intervenes in our lives. I don’t believe in a god that is a musician. So how could I be an instrument of god?

I do believe in god as a metaphor, however. And I don’t say this to be sly. Metaphors are important to human understanding of the world. God as a metaphor has profound implications. So I guess I could accept being an instrument of god—in a metaphorical sense, of course.

So, what kind of instrument am I? Piano? Violin? Guitar (acoustic or electric)? Drum? Flute?

And will I play in tune and in harmony? Solo? Or part of a band or orchestra?

Happy New Year, y’all. Be an instrument of god.
