2013-07-27 – I hadn’t been in New York since before 9/11. That trip was for some sort of business that is long forgotten. What I do remember from that trip is that I stayed a couple of blocks away from the World Trade Center. This week’s trip took me to the same place. The two towers are gone, replaced by memorial holes in the ground—a moving tribute.
In truth, there are two memorials. There is the intended memorial. And there is an unintended memorial. The unintended memorial is the security inspection you have to go through to enter the memorial area. It’s like TSA screening at the airport. And streets are blocked off, both at the memorial and at other sensitive locations in the city like the New York Stock Exchange. The terrorists won. Our lives are forever diminished.
